This is where all the infinite possibilities of the world wide web come to fruition. Creating your own website is a very rewarding feat and we are happy to be on this journey with you to the promise land. Now, I hate to go from that to sounding like your high school home room teacher, but planning ahead is essential for creating a successful website. We will lay out some fundamentals and principals to build from on this venture with you to success.
If you already have a web host and domain name, then you can skip past this part. But if you don’t then I highly recommend you read on. Your domain name is your website name (example: http://www.ezfixhome.com). This is what your customer will type into the web address bar to go directly to your website. Choosing the right name is very important for a plethora of reasons. Many successful websites have names that are short, relevant, easy to understand, and sometimes even informational. My best tip on domain names is always: KEEP IT SHORT!
Choosing your name isn’t always so simple. Your specific domain names need to be available to register, and this isn’t always the case. If you are dead set on creating a website and your domain name IS available DO NOT WAIT to register it. Be advised, just because it is available today DOES NOT mean it will be tomorrow. Content, content, content. Whether you are a small business, brand, product, service, blog, or affiliate marketing website one thing will always be important: content. Consistency is key and planning ahead will help you develop a road map to being consistent. If you are offering a product on your website, why not add a blog, forum, or community to your website? It adds value to your website and gives your customer a reason to come to your website outside of just buying your products. Or if your creating a blog, why not sell branded T-shirts and/or other low cost items to your customers? It adds value to your business model and gives your customers a way to support you beyond reading your content.
There is no one way to go about creating your website. That is why planning ahead can really open up doors for you, because it gives you the opportunity to step out of the box and get creative. Here are some questions to ask yourself while you get your mind moving in this creative process:
What do your target customers want?
Thinking about your target audience is important to reaching your goals with any website. Do some research into what your target market wants and deliver them the goods. Don’t be afraid to ask your customers directly (or potential customers) what they think would be cool features for your website. Cater to your customers and give them an amazing customer experience. The better their experience, the more they will want to come back and become repeat customers.
How many pages do you want your website to be?
Think about how you want your website page arrangement and an estimate of how many pages you will be building. This will help you get organized and also give you an idea of how much work you will be doing to get your site up and running. Drawing a “website map” with how you want your pages setup can help you plan ahead and stay on track while your designing.
Are you DIFFERENT?
Being unique is going to immediately make you stand out from others in your market. Here is my PERSONAL advice, if everyone is walking in one direction, turn around and walk the opposite way with your website. There are TOO MANY websites that are just alike. SEPERATING yourself from the crowd will be a breath of fresh air for your customers. Being different can create a demand for what you have to offer and that is exactly what you want. If your website is discovered organically, you will have a much better chance of obtaining a new customer, rather than a disappointing click-thru (clicking on a website and quickly exiting).
Now that you have done some research and planning for your website let’s talk about actually CREATING your website. Most web hosting sites will have customizable themes for you to choose from. Look for placement of menus, the website style for each theme, and how it fits with what your trying to accomplish. Many of the elements of these themes should be customizable, like fonts, text sizes, headers, and footers.
Think about if you want all your pages listed on the top/bottom/both of the website? Or do you want a button in the top left/right hand corner that opens up with a list of pages? These options will be associated with the theme you choose. Pay attention to DETAIL when choosing your theme and also keep in mind changing your theme is a breeze, so don’t be afraid to switch it up as you move forward!
If you are the stage of creating content for your website it may feel a little bit overwhelming, but let me assure you this is where IT ALL COMES TOGETHER. Dig your heels in and get to WORK! Since every website will have unique content, I want to focus on the most important thing ABOUT your content: SEO.
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and is a very very VERY important part of your website. I’m sure by this point in the process of creating of a website you have been pitched on services from SEO websites, experts, and classes. Understanding what SEO is at it’s core will help you determine if you need these services or if you can learn, adapt and implement SEO into your website on your own.
What does SEO do for your website?
When SEO is implemented into your website correctly, it will help search engines connect people to your website. If someone searches for the exact spelling of your domain name into a search engine they will more than likely find your website. But the goal with SEO is getting high rankings and visibility on search engines when they are searching for ANY relevant content from your website.
For example, if you have an article on your website about “How to do a kick flip on a skateboard” and someone searched “How to kick flip” in Google/Bing/Yahoo, excellent SEO would place you high on the list of search results. Being the first (unpaid) search result is the equivalent of being in first place for search rankings. This is what brings organic traffic to your website and those organic hits could convert to loyal customers for you.
Check out our other articles for more in depth information on SEO, but for now lets get some basics laid out for you. The first step to implementing SEO into your website is researching keywords and search terms.
Keywords/ Search Terms
Understand your customers and how they are finding websites like yours right now. What are they searching into google to find products/content relevant to your website? There are websites like Google Trends and SERPS that you can utilize to find out how many people are using these keywords/search terms monthly and how that has trended over time.
Implement Keywords Into Your Content
Now that you have researched effective keywords for your specific website, IMPLEMENT these keywords and search terms directly into your website. Now, I don’t mean “keyword stuffing”, as in putting it all over just for the heck of it. Implement it into the title and body of each page in a way that adds value to your site.
This could be in the form of an informational article (like this one) or on a product you have for sale on your website. Be as natural as possible including the keywords you researched and remember it’s not about the quantity, it’s about the quality. Including your keyword once or twice in the title and body of a great article will suffice and have more value than stuffing keywords into a poorly written article.
Implement Keywords Into Your Website Metadata
On the back end of your website there is important information called metadata that describes your website on search engines. When using a web host, accessing the “back end” of your website is in the form of menus while your editing your site that are generally visible when your editing a page. Metadata options should include title, description, and tags, but sometimes go more in depth as well.
There are two very important sections you want to consistently edit: title and description. Each page or post you create will have metadata associated with it. What you input here is what will be seen by your customer on search engines when they find your website from a search. More importantly, this information helps the search engines to understand what your webpage is about, hence why keywords should be placed here methodically.
When people find your website in a search your title will be on top and the description will be in smaller font below, so be sure to edit these sections and be sure to use some relevant keywords you researched.
Also, keep in mind your title and description will typically be shown in search engines, social media, and anywhere your website is shared. Put in effort to make these elements look attractive and professional, because this is what your customer will see! Keyword stuffing in your website metadata is I’ll advised and will not look desirable to click on.
While keywords are extremely important, value to your customer should be the ultimate goal here, so keeping it clean and using creativity is definitely a good idea when using SEO to drive traffic to your site. While keywords in your metadata and in your webpage content is important, search engines have advanced over the years and can detect if a website is not likely to bring value to someone who clicks on it.
As machine learning and search engines advance, it’s becoming crucial for your website to have excellent content that isn’t likely to result in someone quickly exiting your website. Spam, excessive ads, and keyword stuffing will likely result in a poor experience for your customer. So here is the question you should always ask yourself: would you visit this website frequently? Be honest with yourself and allow for constructive criticism from others to help you improve your website along the way.
